LG V40 may have 5 cameras, display notch, and Google Assistant button

The LG V30 was announced late last summer (though it didn't launch until October) as a new direction for the V Series. They ditched the Second Screen in favor of a floating widget and gave the device a more "premium" design. Unfortunately, people didn't like the OLED display and the cameras weren't top-notch. LG has since followed it up with the LG V30S and LG V35, but we're finally hearing some rumors about the true successor, the LG V40.

According to sources from Android Police, the LG V40 will feature an impressive number of cameras. There will be 5 cameras in total: 3 on the back, 2 on the front. Two of the rear cameras will most likely be the wide-angle + standard set-up we've seen on LG devices for a while. The purpose of the third camera is not known at this time. On the front, the dual cameras are said to be in a stereo configuration, which could be for 3D face mapping like the iPhone X. Assuming these cameras will be the same as the ones on the LG G7 ThinQ, it should be an upgrade over the V30.

The design of the phone will be typical of an LG device. It will take cues from the previous generation (V30) and the most recent flagship (LG G7). As you might expect, it will have a display notch and a design that mimics a slightly larger LG G7, Google Assistant button included. The LG V40 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, maintain LG's Quad DAC functionality, and have a fingerprint scanner on the rear. The report does not confirm that the display will be OLED, but LG has said the V Series will be OLED.

Personally, I loved the LG V30. In a lot of ways, it was a Pixel 2 XL with a few extra features and a worse camera. But like a lot of LG phones, it failed to really move the dial. Five cameras will definitely be an attention-getter, but will it be enough to compete with the Pixel and Galaxy phones?
