Google Calendar adds Out of Office event and work hour restrictions

Google Calendar is one of G Suite's flagship products. Integrated with Gmail, it recently got a design revamp with Material Design, which was later followed by the new Material Design version of Gmail. The service has a web client along with apps for Android and iOS. Now, Google is adding a new "out of office" option, as well as customizable work hours. This fits in with the "digital well-being" line of thought that Google has recently focused on, a field that includes the new digital well-being restrictions in Android P.

Google Calendar Out of Office EventThe procedure to create an Out of office event is to select the Out of office Calendar entry type when creating an event on the web. The Out of office object will have a different look on the Calendar grid, signalling to others that the user is unavailable.

Google Calendar will also automatically decline meetings that occur during this time period. Users can customize the decline message and the visibility of the title of their out of office object. Also, Calendar will try to intelligently detect when users are creating out of office object based on the title entered and thus change the type automatically going forward. However, users will be able to manually change this if they want a different entry type.

Google Calendar Set Working HoursThe second new feature announcement is working hour restrictions. Users can restrict their working hours to separate personal time from work time. Calendar will inform people trying to schedule meetings with the user outside of these hours that the user is not available at this time. Google notes that users can already set their working hours to one interval for all days of the week, and with the launch of the new restrictions, users can now customize their work hours for each day separately.

Finally, Google Calendar can now infer users' working hours based on their timezone and past scheduling patterns. Users may see a prompt asking them to set the working hours, and they will be able to customize them to their needs.
