Tapping cast notifications will soon open up Google Home or a matching app

The casting notification on Android has been polarising since its launch – a notification which lets you pause, play, stop or mute whatever is being cast is broadcast to all devices on the same network. Google eventually made it possible to disable entirely. It's not only spammy, but it can be annoying for anybody not actively using the casting device. It's also fairly useless, as anybody casting the media will be able to use the controls from the corresponding app. Google seems to realize this, and soon tapping the notification will open either the Google Home application or the matching application on your device of what's being cast. In other words, if you're casting Netflix and you have the Netflix app installed, tapping it will open the app instead of Google Home.

This comes from the Google Play v15 developer notes, which states that "tapping cast remote control notifications now take users to the Google Home app or the corresponding Cast app, depending on if the Cast app supports joining the session automatically". There's a number of other changes too, but they're not really relevant and aren't important to the average user. It's unknown if developers will need to make an update to their applications to support the change, as it appears that applications need only to support joining to support it.

It's a great addition to the casting experience on Android devices, especially as the addition of the notification seemed rather useless. It didn't serve a whole lot of purpose and led to many users switching it off as a whole. It's unknown when we'll see the update, but it should come in with Google Play Services version 15 so long as nothing goes wrong with it. The latest released version of Google Play services is v12.6.73, but that's because Google is skipping versions 13 and 14 for unknown reasons. It shouldn't be too long now until we see it reach our devices.
