Motorola Moto G5 Plus gets Android 8.1 Oreo soak test in Brazil

Lenovo announced the Motorola Moto G5 Plus way back in February 2017, giving users the choice of a design overhaul and the trusty Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC. The device was launched with Android 7.0 Nougat, and fortunately, also featured in Lenovo's Android Oreo 8.0 upgrade plan. Lenovo is now going a step forward and delivering Android Oreo 8.1 to the device, as was seen with the Android 8.1 soak tests for the Moto G5S Plus.

The Moto G5 Plus (potter) is receiving its official Android 8.1 Oreo soak test in the region of Brazil primarily. This update comes in at a decent 1042 MB in size and has build number OPS28.78-2. Alongside the version bump, you also get updated to July 2018's Android Security Patch.

Motorola's Android 8.1 changelog mentions the following changes:

Android 8.1 Oreo: many enhancements including new multitasking features, more efficient notification controls, improved data saver and battery features, new power menu UI and Bluetooth improvements.

Users in Brazil and other eligible countries who want to participate in this soak test need to enroll their device to Motorola's Feedback Network (MFN). The purpose of the soak test is to figure out bugs that may have been missed in the bug testing phase by allowing a small subset of willing users to use the device and its proposed update on a wider variety of use case scenarios. If bugs are found, there are feedback mechanisms in place that would allow the software team to take note of the bug and fix it.

Once all major bugs are fixed, the update is deemed stable and then pushed out to all users through staged rollouts. Having multiple steps in this update rollout process helps limit the damage of major bugs, though the side effect is that the update does take a long time to reach the average user. Hopefully, this soak test concludes successfully and the update is rolled out for all.
